Introducing Fort Street Studio Artist Collaborations and Inaugural Artist Mathilde Burkard

The origins of Fort Street Studio lay in the adventurous spirit of our founders, Janis Provisor and Brad Davis, a married couple of accomplished artists who developed every design in our diverse line of painterly carpets. It’s fitting, then, that the first contributions to our collection beyond those of our founders also come from the visionary eyes of an artist.

For our debut of collaborative artist designs, Fort Street Studio worked with Mathilde Burkard to translate several of the Paris-based designer and illustrator’s abstract compositions into rugs that embody the indomitable spirit of creation.

Inspired by photographs of drawings damaged in a flood, Burkard digitally enhanced the dynamic yet fading movement that resulted from water and charcoal pigments intertwining with paper, seemingly guided by an autonomous will, bringing out the raw beauty of these accidental patterns. It’s a narrative of simplicity and organicity, reminding us of our origins and new beginnings.

“Despite the damages, I discovered their beauty, capturing them through the lens to immortalize their essence,” Burkard says. “I find reflections of myself in the work of Janis and Brad, in the elegant simplicity of their lines and the enduring appeal of their motifs. Fort Street Studio doesn’t merely follow trends; it pioneers them. This collaboration affords me the opportunity to delve into a more introspective realm of my creativity.”
