Genesis Terracotta

For our debut designs created in collaboration with innovative contemporary artists, Fort Street Studio worked with Mathilde Burkard to translate several of the Paris-based designer and illustrator’s abstract compositions into rugs that embody the indomitable spirit of creation. Inspired by photographs of drawings damaged in a flood, Burkard digitally enhanced the dynamic yet fading movement that resulted from blurred water and charcoal pigments, bringing out the raw beauty of these accidental patterns.

“I find reflections of myself in the work of Janis and Brad, in the elegant simplicity of their lines and the enduring appeal of their motifs,” says Burkard. “This collaboration affords me the opportunity to delve into a more introspective realm of my creativity.”

With its organic pattern cast in a terracotta palette, this design conjures visions of Earth’s formation, emphasizing the natural processes of transformation and renewal.
