Custom
Craftsmanship
Fort Street Studio is a boutique brand that specializes in custom sizing and custom coloring of handmade wild silk and wool blend carpets. The company produces our luxury carpets from an extensive catalog of copyrighted original, proprietary designs. While we continually customize our design catalog in color, size, and shape, we are also able to produce a client’s own original design if the selected quality permits. A good supply of oversize looms at our weaving mills allows us to produce oversize carpets in a timely manner without having to wait for an oversize loom to come available. Current maximum sizes are 30 ft wide by 45 ft+ long ( 9m x 14m ).
Custom Color
One of the strengths of the Fort Street Studio portfolio is the understanding of color relationships, resulting in the unexpected color combinations used in each design. Although each carpet design has its own standard colorway, our art studio understands that many projects have their own custom color needs and are able to tailor existing designs for specific color palettes.
For this project, this glamorous and ebullient designer approached Fort Street Studio with a specific color palette. He was looking for a saturated, dramatic carpet to make an impact alongside luxurious upholstery and pillows in a well-loved orange hue. Instead of selecting yarn poms, the interior designer gave Fort Street Studio’s art studio a selection of fabrics, from which the custom palette was composed. After mocking up a rendering, a strike-off was created so the designer and client could give final color approval, and the carpet was woven and installed.
In this Chelsea client’s study, one wall jutted at an angle creating an uneven parallelogram-shaped room. The study was small and the client did not want a carpet to butt up against the furniture. This firm came to us looking for a soft texture underfoot that still had some visual interest, and our SQ design seemed to be the perfect fit. Yet, when Fort Street Studio rendered the floorplan, the designer realized a rectangular rug would not work – an awkward triangle was created between the angled wall and carpet’s edge. A circular rug, however, would camouflage the angled wall, the edge would not run into the furniture, and the jagged “river” down the middle of the SQ design counterbalanced the room so its unique geometry appeared less severe. This custom shape provided a unique solution to the designer’s challenge, with which the client was quite pleased.
Custom Size
Designers are often subjected to architectural anomalies they must decorate around, and Fort Street Studio can help by creating custom sized rugs to fit any sized room.

OVERSIZED
Custom sizing of a Fort Street Studio carpet is a process unlike many offered in the industry. Because many of our designs are neither directional nor repeating, customization involves the redesign of our pattern/weaving graph to meet the client’s size specifications. Although all carpets are offered in four standard sizes, Fort Street Studio has the capacity to weave very large pieces. We are proud to provide one of the largest hand-knotted custom production capacities in the industry.
This project required an oversize installation for an extra long master suite, with additional carpeting extending into his-and-her closets. This reputable firm worked with our art studio to design a customized, combined version of our Ripple In and Ripple Out carpets, to create the illusion of water rippling throughout the room. The art studio then isolated one specific color from the Ripple design to produce a customized wild silk Solid for wall-to-wall installation in the closets.
The Customization Process
The customization process begins with conversations between Fort Street Studio, the interior designer, and client to best understand the direction and needs of the project. For custom color, color-correct renderings are created based on colors provided by the designer in the form of color swatches, fabrics, etc. After selection of a rendering, a 1’x1’ sample representing the custom color is woven for final approval. For custom size or shape, clients are encouraged to provide floorplans, and a rendering of the design is presented indicating how the design will be scaled or repeated.
With the work and individual attention involved, custom sized and custom color orders are each charged a 10% fee. Please know Fort Street Studio will not present any samples or renderings that we feel do not meet the expectations of the client or our design standards.
