Design Inspiration
Wasser is named after one of Fort Street Studio’s co-founder and co-Creative Director Janis Provisor’s favorite childhood artists, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. A 20th Century mad fantastical Austrian artist, Hundertwasser was famous for his crazy hand-drawn compositions with prominent bright colors and child-like qualities.
On Provisor’s most recent design retreat, she describes picking up a ball-point pen and drawing in an additive way, with no repeat – an “automatic drawing”. When she saw what she had ultimately built, Wasser was born as homage to her childhood favorite. The White Coal colorway stays faithful to the initial drawing, while Black Emerald is unexpected, with a whimsical dash of cobalt.
The design is interpreted in hand processed, high-altitude wool and cultivated silk, according to time treasured Persian hand-knotting techniques. Meticulous dyeing of the yarns produce complexity and depth of color which enrich the overall aspect of the carpet. The blending of wool and silk creates a shimmery mix that is a delightful expansion of Fort Street Studio’s repertoire of beautifully hand-crafted carpets.
