Berkeley Hotel London debuts new range of suits designed by John Heah featuring Fort Street Studio hand knotted carpets
The Berkeley Hotel in the Knightsbridge area of London has long been a prestigious 5 star hotel and recently underwent renovations to improve guest experiences, including a new facade and first floor extension designed by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, completed in 2017.
The Berkeley tapped architect John Heah of Heah & Co to design deluxe suites for the entire first floor. These new suites have a residential feel and quality and some of them include private gardens. The rooms, which numbered initially at six and grew to seventeen, all vary slightly and feel like modern apartments thanks to real art, Fort Street Studio hand knotted carpets, Bulthaup kitchens and rich finishes. When you enter, you feel like you’re on a vessel in the soothing space surrounded by beautiful teak wood and molded ceilings. The suites are lush but not formal, bordering on minimal.
John Heah, who designed the celebrated Amanera Playa Grande resort in the Dominican Republic among other Aman resorts, convinced the owners to invest in hand knotted carpets by Fort Street Studio to further support the theme of modern, relaxed luxury. The carpets were all inset into floor wells with rounded corners and a bronze bead between the hand hewn teak floor and hand knotted carpet.
“Basically the suites are small apartments and they feel like a domestic space. With elements like the furniture and fabrics, we’ve made it feel like a collection of items. The books, for example, range from gardening, serious novels as well as specially curated artwork for every suite by the owner himself. We want guests to feel at home” said John Heah.
The carpet designs and colors vary slightly from room to room so that no room is exactly like another, adding to the uniqueness and bespoke quality of the spaces, many of which are interconnecting.
The 33 Fort Street Studio carpets were chosen from our design catalog by John Heah and his team and interpreted in hand knotted wool and silk in a custom color palette that coordinated with the textile and furniture selections.
