Design Inspiration
After first debuting its line of wool carpets in 2013, Fort Street Studio continues to extend its artistic, painterly aesthetic within this new medium. The Studio’s most recent offering is the design OTTO.
Co-Principal and Co-Creative Designer Janis Provisor created the original painting that inspired this design while on one of several stays in Roccantica Italy. She wanted to paint something in the colors of the blazing sunsets she and partner Brad Davis would witness from their terrace perched on top of a medieval hill. The painting ended up looking like the number 8 – the luckiest Chinese number – so she named it Otto for 8 in Italian.
The design is interpreted in a blend of hand processed, high-altitude wool and cultivated silk, using time treasured Tibetan hand-knotting techniques. Meticulous dyeing of the yarns produce complexity and depth of color which enrich the overall aspect of the carpet. The blending of wool and silk creates a shimmery mix that is subtle yet polished.
