Design Inspiration
Fort Street Studio’s Co-Principal and Creative Director Janis Provisor has always been fascinated by x-rays. “I’ve often felt that x-rays taken of different parts of the body were both eerie and beautiful, and have kept many over the years for just that reason,” she says. Although she and partner Brad Davis initially set about designing a neutral companion piece to a more exuberant design in the line, they soon realized that by amplifying the contrast to the extreme (White on Black) they could invoke the mood of a radiograph, and XRAY was born.
This contemporary rug design is interpreted in wild Dandong silk according to time treasured Persian hand-knotting techniques. Color-precise yarn dyeing enables the weavers to execute the studio’s painterly designs with watercolor bleeds and the illusion of three-dimensional, geometric texture. Wild Dandong silk is especially plush and durable, and when hand-cut provides the carpets with a sophisticated suede-like finish that subtly enhances the design’s modern, unique, and evocative motifs.
